Richard Rioux Egg Hunt

There were quite a few free events going on today; but could not pick them all due to time.  We decided to go to the Richard Rioux Park for their Easter egg hunt.  Normally this park doesn't bring in a whole lot of attendance for its' other holiday events; but they had a good turn out for Easter.

We got there in time for the egg hunt.  They had 4 different sections for different age groups and were pretty organized with the hunt.  I don't think they have taken notes on how most places do egg hunt though.  Most places spread out empty eggs to find and turn them in for treats which saves them time and money from having to buy eggs every year.  Here they spent a lot of time putting prizes into each egg and let the kids keep all the eggs.  They get an A++ for effort.  There was a golden ticket in each of the age groups to get a special prize; so that was an added incentive for the kids.

After the egg hunt, the girls got their picture taken with the Easter Bunny using our own camera to take the picture.  It was a decent set up with a cute felt background; but the breeze kept blowing it back.  Hubby stood in the back to hold it down so it looked decent for my picture.

After pictures, the girls bounced in the bounce house for there allotted 5 minutes, then went to play some carnival type games.  It was another fun filled free day!

Saint Patrick's Day

Happy Green Day!!

Saint Patrick's Day is one of those little holidays that doesn't seem to get enough attention if you have kids under the age of 21 that is.  There doesn't seem to be too many kid friendly events going on, so I  got some ideas to celebrate at home.  Here's my list of how we celebrated Saint Patty's Day...

1. Hubby made green pancakes
2. We all wore green shirts
3. We did a treasure hunt for the girls using this template to write clues on.  They searched for gold coins which was 5 pennies put into baggies.  The girls got 6 baggies each.  I emptied out the pennies from my wallet and that determined how many pennies they got.  I can't believe I got 60 pennies of out of there!
4.  I made green mac and cheese for dinner using food coloring and had a green salad to go with it.
5.  For dessert, I made Lucky's Layered Lime dessert.  The one in the picture looked much prettier than mine though.  We used much smaller glasses and all of us ate half or less because it was filling.

You will need:1 box vanilla instant pudding (3.4 oz) *
4 tbsp powdered lime gelatin (3 oz box is more than enough) *2 cups cold milkcrushed graham crackers
whipped toppingsprinkles - optional

Directions:
Combine pudding, milk and 4 tbsp of gelatin in a mixing bowl and whisk for approximately 2 minutes. Mixture will start to thicken and gelatin should be completely dissolved. Place in refrigerator for at least one hour, this will help the pudding thicken.

Just before serving, layer pudding mixture, crushed graham crackers and whipped topping in small glasses; repeat until glasses are full. Top with sprinkles and enjoy!

*Pistachio or any other flavor pudding can be substituted for the vanilla pudding and lime gelatin.

Woofstock 90210

Because my youngest LOVES dogs, we ventured out to Woofstock 90210 at the Roxbury Memorial Park in Beverly Hills.  The girls were in awe, especially my youngest who was surrounded by how many dogs were there.  When we arrived, we heard some type of show already going on, so we quickly zoomed by all the dogs and vendor booths to find the show.  We caught the tail end of the disc dogs entertainment show.  After the show we went around visiting all the dogs that were looking for a new home.  I'm not a big dog fan; but there was a really cute little brown one that I would have taken home if we were here to adopt a dog.  He was a favorite of a few other people too.  After a short while we saw him in the special "I'm adopted" section.  Good for him!

Next it was time for the best dressed dog parade.  The girls really enjoyed seeing all the outfits the dogs were wearing.  The best dressed dog was, Lakers Dog, and Duck Dog who was in a bath tub.  So cute!

Then, came the contest of owner and dog look alikes.  This wasn't as fun as the best dressed dog because only a few dogs actually looked like its owner.  The winner for this was a girl and her dog dressed alike in a Saint Patrick's Day outfit.

We then visited with more dogs and even found a few cats for my oldest daughter to enjoy.  She is the cat lover.  A dog training demonstration was the next show we watched. Then the girls set out to the park's playground close by to play before another disc show started.  Those dogs are very fun to watch and they get so excited to be out there performing.  The girls had a fun day vising with all the pooches and watching all the different dog shows.

Greeen Eggs & Ham, Teddy Bear Picnic and Ramona Quimby

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, the girls made green eggs and ham and some toast for breakfast this morning all by themselves.  We first started out making toast with cookie cutter shapes.  My 5 year old picked a dog bone shape cuz she loves dogs and my 8 year old chose a heart.  With sandwich bread, they quickly cut out their shapes, buttered them and put them in the oven for about 4 min. to toast.  Meanwhile, they took turns cracking eggs and mixing in 2 drops of blue food coloring. This was the first time my 5 year old had cracked an egg.  She was intimated by having to break the shells in half; but became excited when she did it. They poured the egg into the pan where they saw the magic of egg liquid turn into scramble eggs. My 8 year old was really grossed out by the green liquid then became quite fascinated watching them slowly turn into the scrambled eggs.  She has never wanted to stick around to see how scrambled eggs are made; but this time I made her stick around to make the entire breakfast.  After the eggs were done, I put them on a plate with a slice of lunch meat ham and the toast they made.  They loved their green eggs and ham breakfast and even asked for seconds.  They were very proud to make their own breakfast.

After breakfast, we went to our local library for a teddy bear picnic.  The girls got dressed in their dresses and brought their favorite stuffed animal to the picnic. The library room was set up very cute.  There were 10 large colored butcher paper squares all laid our across the room which served as picnic blankets.  On each blanket were several stuffed animals with name tags and paper utensil cutouts next to them.  Each child got a name tag for the stuffed friend they brought with them and picked a hat to decorate later.  The hat was simple; but cute.  It was made from a paper bowl with a circle cut out in the middle and a paper cup wedged in from the top.  The girls chose a blanket with the most stuffed puppies sitting with them.  The librarian read a couple stories, then the kids got up to get themselves a finger food lunch.  Lunch consisted of small turkey, ham, tuna or roast beef sandwiches, cookies, animal crackers and lemonade.  During lunch the kids were read another story and afterward got to decorate their hats with crayons and stickers.  The girls had lots of fun at this event.

Next, we went to Coldstone for some ice cream.  As if they didn't get enough treats at the picnic.  We had promised them yesterday, we would make the trip here since it would be a nice warm day for it.  They got $40 worth of gift cards from their aunt and uncle to come here!  We are going to have to make a lot of trips here in the summer :)  The girls shared a Signature mint ice cream with Oreos in a waffle cone.  Of course I had several bites, just to make sure it was good.  It was!

After ice cream, I took my 3rd grader to see the play, Ramona Quimby, at our local college performing art center.  This was not a free event; but my daughter has enjoyed reading most all the Ramona series and thought going to this play would be fun and broaden her horizons.  Meanwhile, hubby and my youngest went to Mountasia to play some games.  The play was very cute and worth the $10 per ticket to come. My daughter enjoyed it even though she said it was much different than the book.
